This chapter begins with an introduction to the linguistic study of sign languages, including a review of the status of sign languages within their surrounding majority spoken language communities and a brief description of current research priorities in the applied linguistics of sign language. These include sign language teaching and learning, language and politics, sign language within the bilingual context, and technological and social change. It will conclude with a summary as to the role of applied linguistics in identifying and solving problems in relation to sign languages (both linguistic and policy-oriented). Sign languages are not related to or derived from spoken languages; they use the visual-spatial modality; they have their own lexicons and grammars. There are many different sign languages in the world. Unrelated sign languages are mutually unintelligible. Around 200 are listed in Ethnologue. It is certain that there are more sign languages: the current number reflects the relatively recent interest in sign languages.
