Tomando como evide?ncia as propriedades sema?nticas e sinta?ticas internas ao predicado encaixado e a relac?a?o sinta?tica que se estabelece entre este predicado e o nu?cleo da orac?a?o mais alta, mostro que sentenc?as como John is easy to please e John is easy to convince Mary to visit possuem estruturas sinta?ticas diferentes no que tange ao complemento infinitivo do predicado tough. Based on semantic and syntactic properties of these constructions and on the grammatical relationship between the infinitival complement and the tough predicate, I argue that sentences like John is easy to please and John is easy to convince Mary to visit have different syntactic derivations.
