RESUMO: Neste ensaio, pretende-se analisar o essencialismo como uma caracteristica da poesia de Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, tomando como objeto de estudo o poema “As Fontes”, publicado originalmente em 1944 no livro Poesia, e o pensamento critico expresso em Arte Poetica I, publicada originalmente na revista literaria Tavola Redonda, em 1962. Ademais, sera feita uma reflexao sobre o status moderno da poesia de Andresen com base em caracteristicas encontradas no poema em estudo e em sua producao de ars poetica, levando em consideracao as posicoes sobre a lirica moderna apresentadas por Hugo Friedrich em Estrutura da lirica moderna (1991) e por Michael Hamburger em A verdade da poesia (2008).  PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Poesia portuguesa; Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen; Modernidade; Arte Poetica.  ABSTRACT: In this essay, we intend to analyze the essentialism as a hallmark of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen’s poetry, taking as object of study the poem "As fontes", originally published in 1944 in the book Poesia, and the critical thought expressed in Arte poetica I, originally published in the literary journal Tavola Redonda in 1962. Furthermore, we will attempt some reflection on the modern status of Andresen’s poetry based on aspects of the poem in study and on her ars poetica, taking into account the positions on modern poetry presented by Hugo Friedrich in Structure of Modern Lyric and Michael Hamburger in The Truth of Poetry.
