The biological affinity, systematic classification and paleoecological significance of the Portalites genus are discussed. This genus is an important palynomorph that has been used in the characterization of the peat-forming plant communities in the Permian coals of southern Brazil. It is very abundant in the palynofloras where pteridophytic spores are dominant and less significant in those where pollen grains of gymnospermic origin are predominant. The revision of other palynofloras registered in South American sedimentary basins, (mainly Argentina and Uruguay) has shown that although its occurrence is less important, Portalites occurs since the Late Carboniferous until the upper portion of the Early Permian.
