This essay aims to show how Michel’s Gondry’s movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” portrays some thoughts from the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, who is cited along the movie. Both the story’s form and content are influenced by Nietzsche. The eulogy which the founder of Contemporary Philosophy makes in reference to forgetfulness is one of the topics dealt with, since the film tells a story of a couple that decides to erase the memories of each other after a fight. Aside from that, the Nietzschean theme of the eternal return is featured: after the erasing of the memories, the main characters meet again, and the movie suggests that they will live the same story, as they wish. Finally, the character Clementine has a Nietzschean personality in many ways, since she is spontaneous, fickle, impulsive and mischievous. Based on these themes, the influences of Nietzsche’s philosophy are explored, along with possible critiques. The aim of this essay, therefore, is to show what appears to be the intention of the movie creator´s in relation to Nietzsche’s philosophy.
