Based on the analysis of the population composition of Santa Maria valley (Argentine Northwest) during the 18th century, the aim of this paper is to rethink the problem of socio-ethnic classifications. In that sense, while focusing our proposal in a theoretical and methodological debate about the kind of sources that we use, how we do it or did other researchers; we intend to historicize and contextualize the use of certain terms as indian, spanish and mestizo in order to demonstrate that —beyond the interests of the Crown and / or local elites— these categories turned out to be highly mobile and flexible and that they were changing and interweaving new senses in the light of many factors.
