Intelligent Excavation System (IES) has been consid ere to be one of the desirable solutions to improve the productivity, quality and safety of the current earthwork processes. IES is composed of va rious hardware and software modules including task planne r (work command generator), local and global work environment sensors, GPS and other sensors to acqui re the excavator’s status, robotic controller and e lectronic valves, and the manipulator (excavator). A data com munication manager was required to coordinate the s ignal or data-flow in between these modules considering t he operational status of IES such as; excavation start/completion, truck detection, terrain model up date, emergency stop, local sensing, GPS/motion sen sor data handling, and so on. This paper presents the role a nd functions of this data communication manager. Af ter every possible operational status of IES operation was identified, a protocol of each communication pr ocess in the form of string-type was made. The components of IES are connected with either wired or wireless ne twork. Therefore, they can communicate with the manager us ing ocket (TCP/IP) communication. The data communication manager is also capable of accessing a web-based project management information system, which constantly updates the performance of excavat ion robot to online database.
