Ultrasonic telemeters are very cheap. However, they are not adapted to surveing because of their short range gun and their lack of accuracy related to the angle of incidence, the variation of temperature and the speed of wind. Standard optical telemeters on the other hand are very accurate (distance -few millimeters per kilometerand angle). But in addition to their high price, they need a mirror to reflect the laser beam. This makes them almost useless for surveing existing buildings since it is not possible to bring the mirror to the points aimed at.
