This study is an initial analysis of the relationship of poor rural workers from within the province of Rio de Janeiro with deforestation in the second half of the nineteenth century. The aim is to discuss the social and economic factors inherent in the relationships between poor farmers and local nature and its consequences in a region located 'at the edges of the plantation', characterized by the production of foodstuffs consumed in the domestic market and the reduced slave population. The analytical focus is on understanding the dynamics of life of poor rural perspective of the experience, strength, and lifestyles.
