While in infection of cells of Salmonella anatum 293 (=A) with e15[A], phage e15 establishes lysogeny in about 3 hours after infection, in infection of cells A carrying prophage e34 cells which survive infection continue to segregate phage-carrier and noncarrier cells in their progeny even for several hours after infection. In contrast, however, when cells A(e34) are infected with e15 which are propagated on A(e34), lysogeny is established in about 3 hours, even at a multiplicity of infection of 5 or less. These suggest a correlation between host-controlled variation and lysogenization.When cells A are infected at first with e15 and then 30 minutes later with e34, e15 establishes lysogeny in about 3 hours without being affected by e34, indicating that the genetic function of e34 may not be responsible for the interference with prophage establishment of e15[A] in cells A(e34). On the other hand, in this experiment, e34 is interfered with rapid establishment of lysogeny. And in contrast, e34 establishes lysogeny soon after infection when e15-infected cells are infected with e34 180 minutes after e15-infection and/or when cells A(e15) are infected with e34, indicating that the rapid prophage establishment of e34 is mainly attributed to the genetic properties of the phage itself.There is no remarkable difference in time required to establish lysogeny between in infection of cells A and of cells A(g341) with phage e15[A(g341)], indicating that prophage g341 does not affect e15 on its establishment of lysogeny.Similarly, g341 establishes lysogeny rapidly after infection of cells A as well as cells A(ey). It suggests that the rapid prophage establishment is attributed to the genetic properties of phage g341.The above findings lead to the conclusions that the process of lysogenization may be affected by the presence of the genome of unrelated phage.Notes: A(e34), A(g341), A(e15), and A(ey) indicate strain A lysogenized with e34, g341, e15, and ey, respectively.e15[A], e15[A(e34)], and e15[A(g341)] indicate phage e15 propagated on strain A, A(e34), and A(g341), respectively.
