Cancer in children should be treated quality. Chemotherapy is one of effective interventions in managing children with cancer. Chemotherapy shown high effectiveness, but it has harmful side effects, including mucositis. Mucositis is an inflammation and ulceration on the oral mucous membranes. Mucositis can lead pain, sleep difficulties, eating disorders, mood disorders, and difficulty for activities, which would certainly have implications on quality of life of children directly. The purpose of this study was to identify the incidence of mucositis and factors that influence the incidence of mucositis in children with cancer who received chemotherapy. This study was conducted at Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital. This research method is descriptive correlational analysis with cross sectional design. Consecutive sampling technique was administered 60 respondents. This data was collected through Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) and a questionnaires for factors that influence the incidence of mucositis. Data were analyzed by univariate and bivariate. Univariate analysis describes the mucositis incidence of children with cancer before and after chemotherapy and the factors that influence it (nutrition status, mucositis previous experience, type of cancer, type of therapy, and duration of therapy). The results of the univariate analysis are described in the frequency distribution and percentage. The bivariate analysis performed by Chi-square and 2 mean different test to see the difference in the average value of mucositis before and after chemotherapy. The results of this study indicate that almost all children with cancer who received chemotherapy have experience mucositis as many as 53 respondents (88.3%), while the rest of respondents (11.7%) showed has no mucositis by 7 respondents. There are differences in the average value (p=0.000) between before and after chemotherapy with an increase in the average value of mucositis 3.12. The result showed a significant relationship (p<0.05) between experience of previous mucositis (p=0.000), type of cancer (p=0.025), type of chemotherapy (p=0.010), and duration of therapy (p=0.027) with the incidence of mucositis. While the nutritional status was not related with the incidence of mucositis (p=0.077). Nurses as one of the most frequent health professionals in contact with patient, should be able to improve nursing care of children with cancer who received chemotherapy to minimize the occurrence of mucositis by assessing mucositis and oral care.
