This study investigates the adaptation of lateral load resisting systems that are typical of modern steel buildings for application to improve seismic performance and design of timber structures. Emphasis was placed on the adaptation of buckling restrained braces and friction damping devices through the development and application hybrid timber-steel design procedures. A hybrid braced heavy timber frame was designed, using capacity design principles to avoid damage in the primary timber structural components and connections. Overall, the findings suggest that hybrid timber-steel buildings provide a viable seismic design alternative to steel-only structures.
