Purpose: By merging neuropsychological theory andpractice with forensic correctional tenets, the goal of the currentthesis was to explore the profile of treatment-related outcomes andexecutive cognitive functioning (ECF) among reactive violentoffenders and instrumental violent offenders. Method: Three studieswere conducted to examine the following key areas: 1) theprevalence and profile of reactive and instrumental violentoffenders in terms of demographic characteristics, offence types,static risk, criminogenic needs, and psychometric measuresassessing constructs related to aggression (n = 395); 2) anexamination of treatment-related variables, such as readiness tochange, program completion rates, and release outcomes acrossviolent offender subtypes; and 3) an examination of ECF in reactiveand instrumental violent and nonviolent offenders (n = 171).Results: In terms of profile results, violent offender subtypeswere differentiated regarding the severity of violence, degree ofprovocation, familiarity with victim, type of substance used, andemotional state during the incident. With respect to treatmentoutcomes, reactive violent offenders were more likely to drop outof correctional treatment; however, they had lower rates of returnto custody relative to instrumental violent offenders. ECF wasdifferentially related to offender subtypes; specifically, reactiveviolent offenders were more deficient relative to nonviolentoffenders. Conclusion: Many of the findings are preliminary, and assuch, further replication is required. Given the differentialresults related to substance abuse, assessment of risk, programoutcomes, and ECF, differential treatment programs for violentoffenders are an important direction to consider in future programdevelopment.
