The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate a capabilityto do design by analysis for pressure vessels, i.e., design basedon a 3D nonlinear coupled holistic macroscopic analyses. Thisthesis represents a robust methodology for optimization of the GENIV reactor core that is time-efficient and reasonably capable to doaccurate nonlinear thermal/stress analysis. The optimized design ofCanadian SCWR provided by parametrization of different parts of theplenum are presented. Also, the optimized profile of temperatureand pressure for start up and shut down cycles was investigatedwith respect to an objective function to minimize the effectiveplastic strain. The optimized value of effective plastic strain forthe case that pressure is a function of saturated temperature wasdetermined.
