In recent years the method of defining seismic hazard and performing seismic analysis has advanced. As a result the 2005 edition of the National Building Code of Canada has made numerous changes to its seismic design methodology. In 2003 the ATC published seismic design guidelines for use with the AASHTO bridge design specification, which incorporate similar changes into their seismic design methodology. The impact and significance of using the most recent seismic hazard definition proposed by the Geological Survey of Canada and NEHRP site factors on the design and performance of two typical highway bridges located in four Canadian cities are studied. The displacement ductility demand and rotational ductility demand are used to evaluate the performance of the bridges using ground motions compatible with the 10% in 50 year UHS and 2% in 50 year UHS. Seismic design of Canadian Highway bridges using more delineated performance objectives, the 2% in 50 year UHS and NEHRP site factors are evaluated.
