This article analyzes the repartimiento system in the Yucatan province as a basic element of the regional economy, which became the fundamental mechanism used to increase production trough longer workdays and a faster working pace of the Indian laborers. The participation of Mayan society in the repartimiento system is empha­sized, as well as the role that coercion played in the Indian republics. It is argued that the repartimiento system was the me­chanism that allowed the insertion of the ancient Indian production forms in the colonial commercial system throughout the seventeenth century.
