Leisure travelers can be influenced by preference for a specific transportation mode, such as an intuitive dislike or like for a mode. This study investigates the influence of such latent preference factors on the mode choice behavior of interregional travelers. A method for estimating modal share of inter-city express trains is developed that focuses on mode choice behavior in inter-regional trips. Since most travelers are mode captive, recognizing only one transportation mode among various alternatives in their mode choice behavior, a parameterized logit captivity and selectivity (PLCS) model is developed to describe mode choice behavior. The modal shares for some origin-destination pairs related to the Japanese high-speed rail lines are estimated in order to demonstrate estimation performance of the PLCS model. The findings show that the PLCS model is efficient in describing a two-step decision-making process (a mode alternative screening process and a determining process) in mode choice behavior. Latent preference factors greatly influenced the mode alternative screening process. Directions for future research are discussed.
