A small mass imbalance in railcar wheelsets can induce relatively large carbody vibration and worsen ride comfort. The vibration is caused by the excitation force from the imbalanced wheelset being transmitted from bogie to carbody through a traction link. This study describes the development of a displacement-dependent rubber bush for traction links to reduce this vibration. A small gap between the rubber and the inner fixture of the bush prevents the excitation force from the imbalanced wheelset from being transmitted. The authors conducted unit testing of the rubber bushes to check their stiffness and durability, excitation tests using a full-scale test vehicle to verify the vibration isolation performance, and running stability tests with a bogie. A series of running tests on a commercial line were then conducted. Results from the tests confirmed the effectiveness of the displacement-dependent rubber bush under actual service condition. An improvement of up to 3 dB was observed when the rubber bushes were applied.
