Ground coils are one of the most important components in magnetically levitated (Maglev) transportation systems because they generate the propulsion, levitation, and guidance forces that act on the vehicles. These coils need to withstand long-term outdoor use since electromagnetic forces vibrate them when a vehicle passes. The safety and reliability of a Maglev system are dependent upon ground coil dynamic durability. In this paper, the authors describe an electromagnetic vibration tests apparatus that can simulate load conditions under actual train operations, thus enabling researchers to evaluate vibration characteristics and dynamic durability.
