Investigations of coastal pollution by drifted garbage were performed from February 1997 to August 2001. The investigations have been carried out in 718 points along the coasts in Japan islands.A large amount of garbage, which had been drifted to the coasts, was counted and divided according to its type and nationality. This study confirms that the garbage drifted around Japanese coastal arrears like plastic s, bottles, cans and so on, becomes one of main factors of the sea pollution. In addition, Japanese garbage and foreign garbage from neighboring countries, such as China, Taiwan, Korea and Russia are fairly contained.The problem of coastal pollution by drifted garbage is a serious problem in the coastal environment in Japan. It is strongly required that both the prevention measures and the way of depositing the drifted garbage must be established in a hurry.
