ABSTUACT;This paper shows the formation process, the actual conditions and the significance of "Ao-irrigation" in order to explicate the effect of water system transformation by the farmland improvement project executed. In Chikugo lower basin, "Ao-irrigation" is the name of a way to draw fresh water on the adverse tide. The remarkable findings are as follows; (1)"Ao-irrigation" was formed actually in the late Edo era and thereafter became more actively according to development of such as reclaimed farm tand use, river improvements and technology for pumping up. (2)The ways of drawing, the degree of dependence on fresh water and the time period of drawing are different related to the regional and tidal conditions. (3)"Ao-irrigation" system has been formed to deal with difficult conditions of smail water supply and drainage in tidal zones, and of salinity of water. (4)The concept of "Motase" which Is a system of retaining water flow, can be found also in this system.
