有機物と微細土粒子によって構成されるフロックの沈 降速度(v)はフロック径(Df)の関数で表すことができ, 両者の間には形状で決まる定数αを用いて(1)式の関係 が提案されている(足立ら,2003). (1) (1)式では,フロックの密度が大きさに依らず一定で あり,粒子の形状が球であれば,α=2,すなわちvがDf の2乗に比例するストークス則で表すことができる.し かし,海中にあるフロックの形状は複雑な構造を持ち, 実際にはαは0.6~1.5の範囲で沈降速度が測定されるこ とが多い(Fennessy・Dyer, 1996).一般に,微細な有機 物が土粒子に付着しフロックが形成されると,有機物密 度は土粒子密度に比較して小さく,かつ,粒子間にでき る間隙のためフロック密度は小さくなる.このようなフ ロック構造を持つ粒子を自己相似なフラクタルとして仮 定すると,フロックを構成する直径d0の粒子の個数(i) とフロック径(Df)の関係は,(2)式で近似できる.
