Optimum weld heat inputs for electron-beam welding of sheets of various refractory metals such as titanium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum and tungsten were investigated by theoretical and exprimental methods. The conclusions are as follows (1) The exprimental optimum weld heat input up to 60 cm/min of welding speed (V, cm/min) is given by Optimum weld heat input=(3.8•`4.4)•~10-3•~(C20•EƒÏ20•ETm)1.5•~t1.3•~V-0.65 where, C20(cal/gr•Ž) is specific heat at 20•Ž, t(mm) thickness, ƒÏ(gr/cm3) density, and Tm(•Ž) melting point (2) In the above equation, V-0.65 is gradually changed to V•‹at higher welding speed range than 50 cm/min. Then the experimental equaton agrees with the theoretical equation. (3) Weld heat inputs by electron-beam welding are 1/2 to 1/3 times smaller than by TIG welding. Therefore, electron-beam welding is more effective welding method for refractory metals sheets.
