Increasingly commonplace discussions on US campuses about such things as civic education, service-learning, spirituality, and community signal a renewed attention to the place of values in higher education. What might this suggest for study abroad programs in which students must enact any number of implied values everyday as they relate to cultural Others? Can/should a study abroad curriculum be values-based? This article outlines opportunities for exploration, application, and expansion of these Stateside concerns with values in the study abroad setting, in an attempt to encourage educators to take a new look at study abroad's transformative possibilities.
