In Sri Lanka, freshly squeezed juice of Piper betle (Family: Piperaceae) leaves is used as a remedy for skin ailments. Therefore, a cream was formulated by incorporating essential oil and cold ethanolic extract of betel leaves into Vaseline and a clinical study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of the above cream. A double blind, vehiclecontrolled randomized study was performed for a period of 14 days. There was a significant healing effect on skin ailments when patients were treated with betel oil and cold ethanolic extract incorporated cream.
