This article is intended for the reader to reflect on the situation of aging in three levels: 1) offer an explanation some gerontological concepts; 2) note some characteristics of population aging in Mexico; and 3) set forth the advantages of considering human rights and public policy as two essential horizons in gerontological reflection. This study argues that human rights are key factor to reinterpret the problems of aging, State responsibilities and challenges assumed by families. Finally, some suggestions for future research will be rendered.
