Do external or internal factors motivate competitors better? Do they go through the optimal experience during racing? We tried to find answers to these questions in this research with the help of competitors from different sports. The original seven-factor sport motivation questionnaire and the latest sporting measuring flow experience questionnaire were used. Altogether, 115 persons, 57 women and 58 men, participated in the study (40 tactical, 35 endurance, 20 artistic, 20 combat athletes), conducted through online questionnaires. As far as sport motivation is concerned, it was found that competitors in combat sports are the most internally motivated. Flow experience most rarely appears in the case of artistic sports competitors. The possible differences between sexes, ages and performance levels were also investigated. Significant differences occurred only between the sexes in the case of these athletes. The results supported previous research findings, however, new issues were also raised that would require further investigations.
