While our studies on the chromosomes of cultured leucocytes of patients with infectious hepatitis had been in progress as a link in the related project following the work of Nichols et al. (1962), ElAlfi et al. (1965) published a paper on chromosome damages in human leucocyte cultures of normal individuals using plasma of patients with infectious hepatitis. In the present paper we wish to present preliminarily chromosomal data collected so far on the above subjects. The authors are grateful to Dr. Tadashi Kajii, Pediatrics, Hokkaido University, for supplying blood material and clinical remarks, and to Dr. Naoki Ito, Department of Neuropsychiatry, Hokkaido University, for his friendly assistance in collecting some data. Further we are obliged to Drs. Motomichi Sasaki and Akio Awa for their valuable criticism. Materials and methods. Cytogenetic observations were exclusively carried out on short-term leucocyte cultures from 13 patients with infectious hepatitis. In case 2, samples for study were taken at 3 different times after the onset of disease. Except cases 9 and 12 which showed no evidence for jaundice and case 3 which was unkown for icterus, the remaining patients had clinically confirmed jaundice. Their blood samples were collected in a period starting from the time jaundice became apparent to the 150th week (Table I). Control blood specimens were provided by seven healthy individuals. Cytological techniques were given in some detail in a former paper (Aya 1965). Usually, from the 10 ml blood sample collected from each patient two cultures were set up and incubated for 72 hours. Each culture contained 1 ml of patient plasma and 4 ml of culture medium. Chromosome counts were made on at least 30 cells in most cases.
