The elastic behaviour under stress of framed structures, provided they are of simple construction, generally admits of mathematical treatment. When it is remembered, however, thatin many cases it is not possible to estimate the actual strength of a structure from stress calculations alone, we are obliged to turn to experiments in some form or another,particularly when the structure under investigation is of complicated design.
