The article presents the results of full-scale tests of the constructive capabilities of the — «Azipod» type propulsion units for the development of the main methods of breaking ice in the theory. The study of the capabilities of these engines is carried out in many foreign countries, primarily in Finland and Canada, but in these developments, the emphasis has been shifted to studying the influence of the turbulent boundary layer and its exchange between the jet and the surrounding fluid. At the boundary between the jet and the stationary liquid, a viscosity field is formed, as a result of which vortices are generated. These vortices inhibit the movement of the jet, contributing to an increase in its mass. Propellers produce a flow that has a certain force, the advantage of wash is to reduce the concentration of ice and widen channel for other vessels. The author identify the propeller jet forces in breaking of the ice sheet and proposes to use the core of the jet, directing it directly to the ice cover. The observations were carried out on the tanker Timofey Guzhenko (PJSC Sovcomflot), equipped with an «Azipod» while passing through the ice . To assess the “hull ice” interaction, an ice load monitoring system on the ship hull was used. As a result of theoretical studies and empirical observations, the author proposed six ways of breaking ice with a jet from an «Azipod»: breaking the ice with the help of jet power; the destruction of ice under the action of a bending moment; breaking ice due to pressure arising in the inter-haul space; breaking ice when driving at critical speeds (resonant); thermal and shock effect on ice massif. It was concluded that the potential capabilities of azimuth devices for breaking ice are practically not used in navigation, which reduces the efficiency of operation of double-acting vessels when sailing in the Arctic.
