The current stage of the development of the technology for the design of complex production objects, which the sea ports and terminals undoubtfully included in this category, assumes the intensive use of the computerization and modern discrete mathematics as the part of artificial intelligence. Many specialists regard the design and project as a procedure as the guided data transformation. The size and complexity of data sets exclude the possibility of manual implementation of this procedure and data contingency maintaining. The parallel development of the simulation theory, software platforms for the relevant implementation and practice of the products’ utilization in design caused serious gaps in terminology and interpretation of key concepts. Starting as a minor methodological inconvenience, this divergence gradually has developed into a serious obstacle for the practical implementation, since the users, the designers and model developers ceased to understand each other. Ever and ever advanced and sophisticated software tools for the simulation, increasing interest of the specialists in the computer sciences create new possibilities that do not correspond to the level of practical utilization of the simulation models. Besides the difficulties with the outlaying of the copes and expected results of the simulation, the problem is in the absence of the universal and generally acknowledged means for the adequacy proving. The simulation models could serve as very powerful and efficient tool for the investigation of the object’s properties, but only under condition that they properly reflect the real object and not its analogue, close or distant. The paper displays the separate phases of the model’s development over a specially selected example. Different methodological paradigms are combined into a toolkit that provides a designated succession of models inheriting their main features. Every stage has its own goals, tasks and limitations that are identified by the study, as well as the regular procedure of adequacy proof is discussed.
