According to the new pedagogies, respecting the cultural identity of learners is a way of ensuring success in learning. The challenge for textbook designers is to align them with the most recent approaches to foreign language teaching and second language acquisition, while respecting the cultural identity of the students. This article presents the results of a survey conducted with a group of Chinese learners, with a traditional background of education based on the grammar and translation model. The objective is to identify their personal experiences and ‘evaluation’ of textbooks for the teaching and learning of Portuguese as a foreign language. The results indicated a strong attachment to traditional practices, but also revealed receptiveness and openness to new pedagogical models.
