This report describes the development of a computer program that predicts air flows and temperatures in a chimney venting two combustion appliances. Mass conversion, energy conservation and pressure loss equations are used in conjunction with a thermal model of a chimney to define the system. The resulting system of 18 equations and 18 unknowns is reduced to a single equation, which is then solved by a numerical method. Although the model is generally applicable to venting systems serving two combustion appliances, the case which is examined in detail is that of a steam boiler and domestic hot water heater (DHW) connected to a common masonry chimney in a multifamily building. This installation is typical of those encountered in turn-of-the-century construction in midwestern and northwestern US cities. The computations required to determine the leakage areas of each of the components of the venting system are described, as is a preliminary examination of the model performed by comparing air flow and temperatures predictions with measured values for the multifamily boiler-DHW system.
