Two complete sets of normal modes and frequencies were calculated for a benzene molecule. The first set gives good agreement with the assigned frequencies of Crawford and Miller for the planar vibrations and of Herzberg fo r the nonplanar vibrations. The second set gives good agreement with the frequency assignments of Shimanouchi. These normal .modes and frequencies were then .used to calculate the slowr neutron scaltering properties ot a free gas of bcnaone moleciilns. The scattering law, which presents the double differential cross section in terms of the energy and the momentum changes, was calculated for 'each set of frequerlcies and modes. The values onlculated using the Crawford and Miller-Herzberg assignments a r e in reasonable agreement with measurements for liquid benzene in those regions of energy and momentum transfer where the intermolecular forces of the liquid state cnnbe neglected. Use of the Shimanouchi frequency assignments gives considerably poorer agreement with the measurements. Therefore, for the other scattering properties only lhe Crawford and Miller-Herzberg assignments were used. The calculated values of the total cross seedon are 111 good agrooment with measured values. Calculated values of the average cosine of the scattering angle and of the diffusion coefficient a re somewhat higher than values deduced directly from measured cross sections. A thermal neutron spectrum and pulsed neutron parameters calculated fr6m the scattering law agree fairly well with measure-
