The stimulus for this research, concerned with the role of the carrier in antibody formasion, was the finding that polyancons such as nucleic acids could be converted into effective immunogens by coupling them to the basic protein methylated bovine serum albumin. This suggested the hypothesis that antibody formation is initiated by the reaction of antigen with mediator cells through carrier groups of the antigen. (auth)
