Capsule P13Q is the sixth in a series of irradiation tests conducted under the ERDA-sponsored HTGR Fuels and Core Development Program. The purpose of P13Q is to evaluate the performance of LHTGR fresh fuel irradiated in integral bodies under nominal LHTGR operating conditions. The test was designed to operate at a constant peak centerline temperature of 21 21 2 1150°C to fast neutron exposures in the range 6 x 1 0 t o 9 x 1 0 n/cm (E > 0.18 MeV ). The capsule contains 18 fuel rods. Sixteen of the HiGK rods were fired using the cure-in-place process, removed from their graphite firing containers for QC evaluation, and placed in P13Q bodies for irradiation. The capsule bodies were used as fuel rod firing containers; consequently, the test will be used to evaluate the integral performance of LHTGR-type graphite and fuel rods fabricated by cure-in-place. For comparison, two fuel rods fired in packed alumina beds were also included. One batch of TRISO UC fissile and two batches of BISO fertile fuel particles were used in the fuel rods. In addition, each rod contains isotropic graphite shim particles. The fissile, fertile, and shim particles satisfy requirements currently envisioned for fresh LHTGR fuel. The performance of these particles will be used to develop fuel performance models for LHTGR fuel at operating temperatures less than 1150°C.
