The calculation of partial molar enthalpies and entropies of elements that form simple eutectic-type binary systems with plutonium are reviewed. The partial molar enthalpies of solution of several elements that form compounds cr solid solutions with plutonium have been calculated by regular solution theory from solubility data. The calculated enthalpies are (in kcal/mole): carbon, 10.5; thulium, 9.2; manganese, 4.8; rhenium, 10.5; zirconium, 4.2; titanium, 4.1 from 700 to 750°C, ant" 5.3 fiom 800 to 1000°C. The regular solution theory has also been applied to other systems to calculate enthalpies from published solubility data. These results are compared with an empirical approach.
