To facilitate the dismantling and disposal of contaminated equipment, the Bechtel Jacobs Company is evaluating the possibility of filling the cavities of pipes and parts using an impervious urethane foam to restrict the mobility of the contaminants. Samples of the urethane foam were irradiated using the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Co irradiator to a dose equivalent to that expected to be accumulated in 1000 years for both alpha and gamma radiation. Property measurements were performed on the urethane foam samples before and after irradiation. Additionally, gas generation from the foam was monitored during irradiation and the accumulated head-space gases analyzed at the end. The overall conclusion from the irradiation and testing is that the foam did not suffer any significant degradation during the gamma irradiation equivalent to a "1000-year alpha and gamma dose" on the entire volume of the specimen and that the gas generation was minimal.
