Competitiveness in Latin America – A study from Porter’s model

This article aims to explore Porter’s National Diamond model. It begins with a critical analysis of the competitiveness concept applied by Porter’s model. Starting from the competitiveness model we are able to explore the four components that give shape to the Diamond and also to critically evaluate Porter’s model in order to understand it’s limitations. After that we analized the existing ranking models of countries and cities using the GCI – Global competitiveness index, the WCY – World Competitiveness Yearbook, and the ICUR – Urban Competitiveness Index, checking how those three rankings grip to Porter’s model. At last we analized the most outstanding factors “of success” or “failure” in Latin American cities. Key-words: Porter. Competitive advantage. Internationalization. Latin America.
