We would like to thank Matsui et al for their letter commenting on our manuscript entitled “Cytomegalovirusassociated Acute Gastric Mucosal Lesion in an Immunocompetent Host.” Inclusion bodies in the tissue specimen and laboratory findings which reflect cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection including IgM class of antibody to CMV and CMV antigenemia allowed us to diagnose CMV infection in our case. However, as mentioned in the discussion of our manuscript, inclusion bodies are not necessarily observed in the tissue specimens even when CMV infection is strongly suspected (1, 2). Therefore, we should apply for the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique for the detection of CMV DNA if inclusion bodies are not confirmed in the tissue sections. Unfortunately, the prevalence of inclusion bodies in the tissue specimens remains uncertain in cases of CMV infection and thus further examinations will be necessary for clarification
