The Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most widely distributed migratory fish species in the North Atlantic (ICES, 2011). It is a pelagic schooling species abundant in cold and temperate waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea (Froese and Pauly, 2012). S. scombrus is a beneficial commercial species, targeted by purse seines, midwater trawls and longlines (FAOFIGIS, 2005).
