Postmodern society uses various substances to improve their quality of life. Many of these substances are drugs and many of these are already considered emerging contaminants and present in various locations due to human action. There is a concern of the international scientific community to monitor emerging contaminants and establish quantification protocols that may establish tolerance limits of these substances and thus protect human communities from possible health problems resulting from this contamination. There is evidence of numerous emerging contaminants (antimicrobials, fungicides, hormones, anti-inflammatory drugs) in surface waters and foods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of progesterone in tissues of lettuce (Lactuca sp.) by ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV). The plants were grown in vitro and tested against different concentrations of progesterone (5,10,100 and 1000 ppm). The part of the plant collected for analysis was the leaves. It was used as solvent the ethanol 92.8 GL. It was detected the presence of progesterone after the interval of a day of substrate contamination until the eighth day, and the concentrations found were between 0,14 and 1,11 ppm in the ethanol extract of the leaves. This study indicates the potential contamination of plants, when they are irrigated with water from water sources contaminated with progesterone and its metabolites, which means the indirect consumption of these contaminants by the population during the ingestion of contaminated plants.
