The aim of this paper is to point out the big topics articulating the practical philosophy of John Stuart Mill. As is well known, Mill’s practical philosophy has been revisited thanks to current discussions on utilitarianism as a moral doctrine and its applications to social and political philosophy. At the end of this paper it is shown that the application of Mill’s utilitarianism to social and political philosophy consists in a “revised utilitarianism”, in which democracy and progress have a foundational role.
