Considering the various critiques against Aristotle that one can find in early modern thought, the article asks to what ex tent any specifically Protestant critique is discernible. Luther’s complaints are explained as a specific Reformation varia tion of some critiques against Aristotle typical of late-medi eval Agustinianism. Finally, the influence of this position on Melanchthon is considered.
