Backeround Recently, it is important for safety landing of an airplane to prepare the appropriate brightness of runway lights and approach lights under various weather conditions. The illuminance and appearance of these lights at pilot's eye position should be analyzed to evaluate the quality of the visual information. The number of runway lights is 758, and the number of approach lights is 243 in Narita airport. 2. Algorithm of simulation system At first, the algorithm to display the appearance of runway lights and approach lights on the screen is shown in Fig.1 and 2. The range of the pilot's view from the windshield of cockpit is calculated between the upper limit angle of -1 degree and the cut back angle of 17 degree. These calculated patterns are shown appropriately on the screen with height of 114.1 mm, width of 269mm and the distance between the eye and the screen of 3 5 3.4mm. Under these situations the positions of these lights on the screen are calculated by the algorithm of Fig.3 and 4. It is possible to display these light patterns viewed from pilot's eye position in Fig.2. Next, the algorithm to calculate the illuminance of each light from the pilot's eye position is shown in Fig.5. The horizontal angle 0 and the vertical angles B are calculated by the geometrical analysis. In this study, the program produces the bit map files to make the speedy simulation. This program to display these lights can disnlav 3 moving frames ner second.
