Relation between basic properties of barium tungstate emitter and characteristics of 400-Watt high pressure mercury lamps using the emitter was investigated.Measurements of emission and evaporation properties of the emitter were performed in a test tube connected to an exhausting pump. Starting characteristics and lumen maintenance of the lamps using the emitter were also measured.An emitter consisting of a mixture Ba1.8Sr0.2CaWO6 and 11.5%(wt) aluminum oxide has a higher evaporation rate of active barium than that of a mixture of Ba1.8Sr0.2CaWO6 and 21.9%(wt) yttrium oxide. The lumen maintenance of the lamps using the latter emitter is superior to those using the former emitter. It becomes clear that lower work function of an emitter results in lower starting voltage of the lamps.
