This paper compares the first album of the Sao Paulo based group A Barca to Mario de Andrade’s musical nationalism in the early 20 th century, which inspired the contemporary group. Rather than precisely replicating the original sources, A Barca creates a hybrid cultural form that blurs the constructed distinctions between popular and erudite, traditional and modern. By analyzing A Barca’s project, this paper addresses ongoing regional dynamics within Brazilian culture and the problematic constructs of “authenticity” and “popular”.

Musical Nationalism for the 21st Century: From Andrade’s Archive to A Barca’s Repertoire
