This paper analyses intertextuality of A. Schopenhauer’s thought in Zola’s novel The Beast within. Our study is divided in three parts: we start by the analysis of sufferance and ennui, Schopenhauer’s themes par excellence. The middle part is dedicated to the study of the irrationality of humans, almost every character in this novel being dominated by his instincts. We find this vision of a human being very close to that of Schopenhauer’s vision of a man as a puppet of the blind Will. Zola indeed in the chapter II of his novel uses the poetic image of a man as a “broken puppet”. Finally, we study Zola’s metaphysical vision of an irrational world, of which the symbol is a closing image of the novel – that of a frantic train rushing through the darkness,
