Heme oxygenase (HO) catabolizes heme into biliverdin, iron, and carbon monoxide by consuming electrons and molecular oxygen and participates in several physiological processes in a variety of species. To clarify the strategy employed by different organism for HO tuning, the HO activity from different organism are compared. EPR of the respective HO complexes has revealed similar but distinctive heme axial coordination structures. Oxygen consumption rate monitored by micro-sensor, stoppedflow kinetics analyses, and the kinetics of reactant, intermediate, and product degradation/formation observed by ESI-MS, revealed that rat, fish, soybean, and cyanobacteria HO reactions are uniquely and finely tuned at different steps of the successive reactions.
