With six cockerels fed ad libitum the respiratory quotient and heat production rate were determined hourly for 70 hours after cessation of feeding. The respiratory quotient values declined progressively from 0.87 to 0.73 for the first seven hours, and then ranged from 0.70 to 0.75 during the remainder of therespiratory test. The hourly changes in the heat production rate after cessation of feeding were similar to those in the respiratory quotient and characterized by a diurnal variation. The daily heat production rate was significantly lower in the second day than in the first day of starving. No significant difference in the daily heat production rate was observed between the second and third days of starving. The cockerels reach the basal condition 24 hours after cessation offeeding and the starving heat production can be determined between 24 and 48 hours of starving.
